In this session, participants explore the impact of communication styles on professionalism and ethical conduct. While thinking and talking like a lawyers lends itself to defensive communication, it often leads to unnecessary conflict and dismissiveness. Through the lens of supportive versus defensive communication, we examine practical ways to reduce conflict, increase accountability, and enhance collegiality in interactions with clients, colleagues, and the courts. Drawing on California's Attorney Guidelines of Civility and Professionalism, the course promotes effective, respectful discourse aligned with the expectations of the State Bar and the judicial system.
