Vehicle Theft v. Fraud

Vehicle Theft vs. Fraud is a one-hour presentation designed to assist participants in determining if vehicle damage claimed after recovery is consistent with a theft scenario. This course covers vehicle theft methods consistent with various vehicle types and examines how manufacturer's ignition systems and technologies are possibly defeated to allow vehicles to drive away. Ultimately, this course provides participants with information needed to understand elements and conditions consistent with actual thefts vs. fraudulent claims.
Michael J. Urban, P.E., ACTAR, is the Transportation Practice Leader at Rimkus, bringing over 25 years of multifaceted engineering experience in forensic evaluation, vehicle accident reconstruction, and automotive system design. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Windsor and earned a Master of Science in Computer and Electrical Engineering from Kettering University, with a focus on autonomous vehicles. Mr. Urban is a registered professional engineer in multiple states and a Certified Vehicle Accident Reconstructionist (ACTAR 1798). He has led investigations into vehicular collisions involving motorcycles, passenger vehicles, commercial trucks, agricultural, and construction equipment, as well as product and mechanical system failures.
His work encompasses vehicle accident reconstruction, analysis of mechanical component failures, product design validation, and insurance fraud investigations including vehicle theft and keyfob data analysis. Mr. Urban provides technical consulting for legal, insurance, and corporate clients, offering expert testimony in both civil and criminal proceedings. He is a member of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators (IAATI) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), participating in committees dedicated to Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and On-Road Autonomous Driving. Notably, Mr. Urban holds a U.S. patent for the InfiniVu full-length open roof system used in Jeep Liberty vehicles. His ongoing involvement in vehicle system evaluation and design, coupled with extensive forensic investigation expertise, supports his role as a leader in transportation engineering and accident analysis.
